(un)certainty == freedom the owners of the device will have. Will they prefer a black box(manufacturer control==certainty) or a white box(owner control==uncertainty)

Believe it or not humans(grown ups as well as not so grown ups) as a species can never stop complaining. Its really unbearable to watch the various incidents unfolding(purely own thought process of technological advancement causing the dissatisfaction) right in front of oneself. Happen to get my hands on PSP 3001(yep, a Sony product) Its an awesome product with no freedom for user(mainly it was meant to be for a certain age group so not much of freedom/responsibility talk involved). (OSHW)The kid happen to buy PSP with the intention to play as much game as possible as soon as the device was bought but to his disappointment there was one UMD(universal Media disc) and another one bought for 500+INR but the kid was not satisfied. The package came with
- power adapter
- PSP
- 8GB MMC
- manual (ridiculously was meant for non English speaking audience)

* no USB cable was provided.

This device was/is a great piece of work (HW as well as SW(firmware)) and there it was in the hands of a kid so that he/she can play with it(superficial act) and no knowledge of device either its hardware spec or software stack could be elicited out of that device but little bit of googling helped with some wanted information like

graphics accelerator
no mmc
sdcard size

I am not certainly asking Sony to part with HW schematics but they can at-least let the device owner who want to willfully go beyond set gaming use(there are tons of games I can get my hands on then why confine to games that is defined by manufacturer). They can also add the void warranty if something done beyond gaming purpose and believe it or not there are takers for such options too(not too many but yep they exist). Its tug of war between user/manufacturer gaining access to the device. Seriously device owner paid for it and they don't have complete access to the device, must be kidding(Its like after buying a motor bike one cannot open any part of it because that is the invasion of privacy so says the manufacturer. Well then why to sell the product if they want so much privacy). Who ever thinks in that way they take the responsibility of what happens to device is of their own doing and believe it or not its exciting for very few and for most its the pain in the a**(just a matter of frame of mind).

Yep the device came with certainty i.e Sony will take care of anything if any thing goes wrong but was the kid satisfied by buying the product. NO!!! reason there was not enough games provided... reason the ignorance of the ones accompanying the kid as well as those recommending the device based on its certainty and Sony invariable cashing in on any thing the poor kid touches (know that the game creators need be payed) but this is no way to make money.
Another reason for switching the area of responsibility i.e philosophy behind FLOSS where the user desist from being ignorant and see to it that what they want.
Certainty which includes
- You don't have to be responsible
- Everything is the responsibility of the providers(Sony in this case)
- Don't even bother to know any thing related to installing process
- provider will be charging exorbitantly for the services (don't complain)

Uncertainty which inculcates or involves
- be responsible(you make or break the device)
- be attentive
- be far-sightedness i.e use device for life long without being bogged down by the manufactures terms ones the consumer buys the product its his/her device and should have the freedom to upgrade or do what ever the user wants with no restrictions imposed by others.
- the manufacture take less or no liability even if the device is buggy

[Solved] - HP F4488 not printing - /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed

Happen to remove my color cartridge and test out only with my black cartridge. It worked the first time but later on every time when I selected the printer with the respective application beside the deskjet F4400 - /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed was displayed. I tried stopping and restarting the cupsys daemon
/etc/init.d/cupsys.d stop
/etc/init.d/cupsys.d start

I couldn't get it started so following the instruction at http://chenjie66.wordpress.com/2011/03/26/usrlibcupsbackendhp-failed/ which did work.

I don't know whether the gui equivalent of such resolution is available or not.

Retro Tracing - slmodem(USB V92 56K) with driver

To be precise its Krypton Modem v.92 56K USB

The device looks sleek.Driver can be found here http://dl.gnumen.org/slmodem-2.9.10.tar.gz
Yep its a dial-up modem running on 2.4 kernel. It was run on weendoz first then got the driver from www.smlink.com(site not found now) for GNU/Linux. Use to make use of the driver in Redhat 9.0 and ran like it should be.. when speed was not of concern than the device(s) made to run on GNU/Linux(At that time compiling the src to activate the device was considered c00l, now its almost apt/rpm).Wanted to see when I did it and the date was 2006-2007.

The Redhat 9 was not also automounting the usb pen drive. So these steps helped in recognizing the device and mounting it.

Its high time that computer users indulge in basic updation of their own knowledge regardless of age factor, the main reason behind such an advice/request is because of the unnecessary trend that gives the user the impression that one has to keep up the up-gradation of semiconductors even when the need is very basic. But for a user to know what is basic and what is not he/she should know what he will be working with.
The incident that happened is real and I could not feel much better after i insisted on my recommendation on a very basic stuff like IDE over SATA.
This was really not very technical in nature but the need of one of the users(ignorant of course, no disrespect meant) device be replaced and unfortunately the service guy who insisted on SATA than IDE even with the SATA drive not being recognized by BIOS, so used other(IDE) drive to install (you know what == Msoft) and from with in in order to make the SATA drive available to the OS had to install raid driver and made it work(kudos to him, no doubt) but when insisted on IDE drive he came up with an argument that in case of upgrading the system one can use the SATA drive hence saving penny but when I asked him what if the same problem of install the os comes, the drive is useless if its not recognized by BIOS. Apart from that even in the OS one has to install the raid now why complicate the matter when IDE is available. He won't budge , isn't it compromising our freedom to install what ever we want whenever we want, one has to depend on him for that. If the user is not interested in upgrading the sytem then what?
Why is it that a normal demand like IDE is preferred over SATA creating so much of fuss?
Aren't users responsible to chose what they want? for this to happen users need to grow beyond clicking on start button and taking application of their own choice and thats their own responsibility to upgrade knowledge and no one will spoon feed them or take class on such matters.

Rescuing using GNU/Linux

A simple query like Msoft box is infected with virus will involve all the S***ty stuffs together with other requirements. I hate it when users keep complaining about virus and any anti-virus I recommend, on top of that they don't know their own machine. For me its like a minefield ready to explode.

Notation:-
boxA - infected
boxB - foreign

These are basic stuff every computer user is expected to know so that when something goes wrong it can be put to practice, but it is a big ask for user who likes using OS(msoft) for basic task. The dilemma is at the time of explaining the possible reason why its not working to "such users" - they don't even care to know and its mere waste of my time and energy troubleshooting such machine.

Even though the technological singularity is proposed keeping in mind the arrival of more intelligent machines it need not be the case. It can happen with people who are tech savvy. There occurs a difference in how one perceives knowledge/technology and there will be small pockets of individuals working with or upgrading their knowledge regardless of what happens in the ignorant general public arena.
Enough ranting, diving into how GNU/linux came to rescue. Scenario was, a win boxA when powered on boots and starts scanning for (human interface) virus(HIV), the box was a breeding ground for HIV I had to quarantine myself after visiting the box :). No application would execute. On top of that the CD/DVD drive was not accepting bootable disk (user didn't know about that). Thinking about the worst, thought even the BIOS is being compromised.. bloody miscreant may have flashed it, So took out HDD and installed GNU/linux server (CLI) as well as win on boxB, everything worked not to forget the backing up process which was done on external HDD(usb).

Now installed HDD on boxA and viola even though the config of boxA and boxB were entirely different. GRUB was shown and linux booted without any problem but NIC was not recognised. Even the external HDD was also recognised as "freecom technologies".
Now the moment of booting into win as usual it didn't but now tried to install OS on boxA but CD was not being accepted. All these times it was stupid DVD/CD drive that was faulty, only if the user had known about his/her machine all these would have been avoided.

The mere display of "E" caused me quite a discomfort only to realize latter that it was my own fault/careless approach. Just a look at the manual caused the error to vanish.
RTFM is the ultimate guide.
Steps that I carried out (power button light blinks all the way to step 8)
1. Without connecting the USB connect the power .
2. press the power on button
3. Place the paper in the tray.
4. open the cartridge door (the power is on), this brings the cartridge holder in the middle automatically.
5. Place the cartridge
6. Close cartridge door, wait for alignment page to print.
7. Open scanner lid. Place alignment page face down.
8. Close lid. Press scan button. Wait until power on button light stops blinking, this means the alignment has been completed. Completing the alignment ensures better print quality.
**Everytime a new cartridge is inserted it prints the alignment page and it should be allowed to carry out the task 8 so that the alignment is carried out properly**

It is assured without doubt that things don't seem the way they are. My routers web interface was configured in a way I wanted, only to find that it has least changed the priorities. For instance the WAN interface and LAN interface was changed but the nmap output for open port is pretty evident.

Not only that the TR-069(technical report) client config for ACS (auto configuration servers)was enabled all the time in the CPE(customer premises equipment). This enabled the ones who provided the device to carry out the so called upgrades(I sincerely doubt that) in my device.

In short the only protection that is there is because of the dynamic IP address that is allotted to the user...

Love/Hate relationship with BSNL

The most responsible and irresponsible(at the same time) form of government based service ever. The frequent disconnection of BB is very usual with dataone connection provided by bsnl and some of the line condition that carries the signal is in such a dilapidated condition that its not possible for quality service until it is replaced and the line man will simply rejoin the exposed joins which corrodes subjected to env condition.
I tried to bring to notice of BSNL official thru online grievance method. It was logged on nov 2010 and the rest of response from BSNL is given below.
Looking at the resolution they have provided its pathetic. They have closed it without the problem being solved, reason- it's not a problem for them since its a commonly occurring situation.

Once before in feb I received a call from bsnl regarding the BB and I said "NO haven't got a problem" and I started thinking when I complained and soon it struck me that it was on 19/11/2010 that I filed a grievance and repented saying no to a call that rarely comes. well in 14/02 i got a call and was asked again well then I asked them when was the complaint registered and they said it was some days back. I rectified by saying some months back and described my issue of frequent disconnection and also quoted that the IBF also have users facing the same problem and I thought its a trademark of BSNL to have such a BB connection. He replied that it could be a line problem . I even said that between my home to the telephone post there are 3 exposed joints which itself is pathetic and can I have a single line extended from the post to my home. response can be done. still waiting for the action.

Creating an impression is not a priority here (as is seen)

The UI has been changed from a single and simple GTA02 device to a more muddled/messier front page which is a sketch form of devices (and its byproduct) lying around the desktop(if it falls in that group). The mere intention of such an approach is not to entice others with a color display rather giving a black and white impression of what its all about and what it gets involved with. Though lot of work is yet to be done hopefully will implement what is needed. Felt better to display the whole scenario which makes the mobile device(gta02) important. Its not a standalone rather most work involves the IA32 machine which deserves mentioning and this is how I felt is/was right. The Idea is to change the image of respective device on mouse hover as well as display the config of device in a tooltip. This is mostly done for and on firefox. Don't have time to do the adaptation work for other browsers.

I made use of PS for slicing and saved it in html format. Vala!!! I don't have to create a table it does for you.
The overlapped text in the tooltip was rectified by specifying the line height , setting it equal to the font size for #tooltip

yesterday as I was carrying out my mundane task with my wa3002g4 - regular disconnection issue still persisting - but with all that and no program accessing the network the wlan indicator was blinking as in being accessed and with the firewire it was evident that the network was being used without my consensus and now was very eager to find which program was accessing the network so with little search, the very regular form of suggestion - netstat/tcpdump/wireshark was propping up so with the tcpdump found that the

was accessing my box without permission. but even before checking which was the process that was doing it. It stopped - later on found that it was the amazon site doing its job - but how could they do that with no consensus.

Latest driver for HP Deskjet F4488

The default hplip 2.8.2 on ubuntu 8.04 was not recognizing the deskjet_F4400 printer so the latest driver (hplip-3.10.6.tar.gz) at the HP was installed from src.
Almost all the steps are specified in hplipopensource.
If the default hplip is installed, remove it.

Download the src from http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/downloads.html

extract the tar.gz file

now connect the usb printer and power on the printer... if not done this way the hplip will not detect the device

su hp-setup

will activate qt4 based config dialog... follow the instruction as specified and by opting for test prn page the following will be printed out..

All the features of the all in one printer has not been used on my box
In my case the cups daemon was disabled... to enable it use
sudo sysv-rc-conf
and start the service using
/etc/init.d/cupsys start

An era(exhibitionist) where looks is what all matters there is a cmd line browser links(there are others too) which obviously displays only the content . Only if people were interested in reading who would have given a thought about the GUI (css, images, colors). Ask any content render-er how much time it takes to think(conceptualise), write(involves proof reading), then submit in a public domain and you won't get a definite answer because it is not time frame based. All these with my reputation of being a notorious bad spelling:).
I would have just spend my time on the content only if cmd line browser existed but since it merely is not existing among the gui browsers. Now a days it is more than a necessity to have a "punch line" gui and what better than my own face...HoHoHo
Have a look at the sreenshots of non gui and gui display of gnumen.org and decide for yourself which will the general public accept.

With cpanel at our disposal it's a cake walk to create a subdomain. I wanted it to be multisite but to my disappointment after trying it on my testbed which required emulating the real time setup of a webhosting co when tried to create one in public domain it failed :( thought of enforcing it using the shell account even that was denied.. they say "its out of security reasons".

wifiLinux saved my day. Yet another encounter with itchy scenario which I wished Ginnie could have completed and I could devote my time to bit more constructive work.
One of the typical answer that one gets when dealing with msoft os is any problem is plainly/blindly blamed on virus. In the current senario it was the corrupt driver or inappropriate driver that was giving the problem BSOD.

The wifi wasn't working properly and wasn't sure whether it was the driver or the device itself(atheros -AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter )
so the linux(ubuntu) was used with the atheros driver to check the functionality of the device. the instruction(http://nothingcanstopu.blogspot.com/2009/06/ubuntu-804-atheros-communications-inc.html) previously scribbled came in handy and worked like a charm. no probs whatsoever.

With freebsd the installation is much simpler than linux as we just need to create a slice which latter on is partitioned. The GUI is as effective as any linux version. wasn't able to get the atheros wifi working even though the inbuilt option of atheros driver was present.

When everything is expected to work smoothly something will behave in an unexpected manner. This time it was the jenes3c theme

which was working properly but all of a sudden it was taking hell lotof time to load (using GNU/linux) so tried hosting the images andreferrenced it in the tpl file but even that was not working and theamazing part was the there was no problem with the counterpart(Windows), It was working as expected on that platform. Why WhyWhy????? .... cann't come up with any rational reason. So changed the theme to the current one.. Hopefully will stick on with it iff not presented with no such @^&%^$(.

It is very simple to host a site with so many cms available that too a dynamic website. I can vote for drupal since I am using it. But if you want to get to have a look and feel of what you have in mind better be ready to get your hands dirty with scripts we can have respite not to type in long lines of code. just eeny viieny. bit html, css be ready to dive in the php pool.
It was really simple to get the look n feel with bit of css and html editing. Lots of features are available in the form of a module.
Interesting:- there are more than one way to get things done. let your imagination run wild.
I have included an image gallery with the 3rd party image hosting site (yet to acheive the desired result), contact form with webform, DPM, blog (it goes without saying) and many more.

The other day (siblings Laptop)the mic of the presario C700 on win xp - not responding (internal and external).
Reason: Other end were google talk users.
Even though the skype was properly working with responsive mic the other users were unable to configure it - Believe it or not that too on Windows.
SOooo in the end had to get the updated audio driver for make(GOOGLE TALK) it work but still some flaws are there like the external mic still conked up but internal mic is working.

Amazing thing is HP's compaq presario c700 doesn't come with the XP's support for the devices explicitly. It comes preinstalled with vista pista. Crap!!!!

At the time of installing OS using QtEmu the process is pretty direct
1. creating the hard disk img which of course allots space
eg:- /home/ranjit/MyMachines/Ubuntu-9.04/Ubuntu-9.04.img
2. Select the valid CD-ROM image or physical device in my case it was CDROM
/dev/scd0
boot from CDROM
3. If necessary enable the network.
Now just click the start button. This will boot the image from CDROM
After installation
point the Image or device for this virtual device of CDROM option to
/home/ranjit/MyMachines/Ubuntu-9.04/Ubuntu-9.04.img

now the machine is ready to boot from the installed img on harddisk

I have a Dell Vostro A840 - having atheros wifi card and unfortunately ubuntu 8.04 doesn't support the driver i.e the restricted driver - by default it supports madwifi (Multiband Atheros Driver for Wireless Fidelity) driver but the HAL part is closed.

Using ubuntu live CD deleted the Win partition and newly installed ubuntu keeping the home partion intact (since intrepid was giving me some trouble related to network - static/dynamic). Now I was able to get over the problem and was able to create partitions using win partitioner, but at the time of instation it would again enter into the "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration" and would start again॥ soo i did the the ubuntu installation again which got the windows entry in the bootloader and selected the wind option now enter the win boot cd and continue with the installation.. Remember to remove the win boot cd at the time of restarting..

There was a time when installation from rpm was a trend then came aptitude and apt-get. Well here the src is compiled to get a workable Qt env.
I have tried to get rid of most err during compilation

God's name is dragged into doing diabolic, wrong and scrupulous acts . What really is amazing the ease with which the act is carried out and there is no repenting in doing such thing because in the eye's of the doer it seems right now how could that be.. Since these are carried out on all fronts - Muslims, Hindus, Christians... I'm mostly in touch with such groups thank god for that.. and in what religion i belong to? really I am ashamed of saying that I'm HINDU after the act of rama sena act .. Now how in the name of god they can carry out such an act .. This brings me to another question .. Is it soo simple to take law, moral, cultural, religious .. into our hand if soo why not to have election for that too... even I feel that I should form a group to head all these niche groups..

Life is said to be a blessing and my observation is that it's the need of the man that persuades them to do stuffs regardless of what is right or wrong.

The reason for such a dashboard is because of the fact that we tend presume that we are blocked by certain instances or incidence that take us to back foot, but one thing that is easily forgotten is the inner strength that we have that can help us to either convert that to do something better or help us to take up the matter in a lighter sense.

For me FLOSS is not just about the software development but it's the way of life that u select ... simple, modest, philosophical. It lets u do what u want to do regardless of market trend, recession(that's the big talk doing around now a days). Apart from that the world that we live is full of unrest, uncertainty, unsympathetic, anarchy arising out of greed for money, position, power, now FLOSS in a way abolishes all these well may be that's the reason why some compare it to communism and i really pity them because FLOSS is far beyond and away from communist principles reason I hail from god's own country - kerala where one dominant party is communist and it's no different from other parties - shameless, clinging on to power no matter how pathetic the situation is . Now a days politics is a career option and not a social work then obviously it's bound to affect the ones who elect those - ) .

Currently I am using Ubuntu to quench my thirst in whatever I want to do and believe me it provides everything I want.. I want to make my stand clear that I am not against any OS(proprietary) what I do feel is that people will ultimately converge towards something that is GOOD now that depends on person to person

Another important lesson that I have learned is to tackle problem(s) just by being quiet.. well it may backfire at u in some instances because at times when u do feel like talking something u just can't do that remember mutation.. yep u have evolved into a quieter being :)
